Chapter 10

Jack

Blakely’s coloring is pale and her nose red from holding back tears. I don’t know what she found in her mother’s apartment but it spooked her bad. With all my senses tingling, I call for my two backup guys who I hope are still waiting at the entrance.

“We’re on the move. Meet us at the east gate.”

“Copy that, mate.” When Lucky’s Aussie accent comes through loud and clear, I heave a sigh of relief.

I can only assume a man like David Young has had the time and resources to dig deeper into my cover. Patten Securities is the best but even so, the Mormon leader must be suspicious.

Still, I’m betting the bag of cash is sitting in his office and I’m not leaving millions of Grayson’s dollars here in bum-fuck Utah.

I consider letting Blake go on ahead but drop the thought when I see the two gorillas blocking our way. Beyond them, in the street, Lucky and Suds meander. Suds takes off his Navy Seal cap and scratches his head before putting it back on.

I mutter into my cell phone at his signal. “I got one more thing to do before we leave. Get ready to go.”

“Copy that.” Lucky moves in closer to the fence, then motions to Suds who enters the white van parked across the street.

Holding Blakely’s forearm, I move her along the sidewalk until we get to Young’s townhouse. Unlike the one we just left, this one is well-kept with a Mercedes parked in the driveway.

When I walk up and knock, Blakely’s swollen mouth drops open. “What the hell are you doing?”

“I’m getting my money back.”

“What money?”

“Those other men were bidding on you. I won.”

Before she can give some snippy retort, a guy the size of a linebacker answers the door. “May I help you?”

I push my temporary wife behind me. “I’m here to see David.”

“I don’t think he wants to see you. You should go while you still can.” He reaches for his inside pocket in a move so blatant, it’s worthy of a sitcom.

Holding Blakely behind me with one arm, I crack the bones in his gun hand by whipping out so fast he never sees it coming.

His eyes grow wide and he tries again but before he can inhale, I put him down with a knee to the groin and elbow to the top of his head. At the sound of him dropping, Blakely peeks around my body and sharply sucks in air. I’m sorry she had to see that.

“Stay close.” I grab her hand and pull her to the top of the stairs.

David looks up from where he’s sitting at an island in the kitchen. Behind him, two women work at a long granite countertop between the stainless-steel appliances.

I use the muzzle of my gun as a pointer and wave. “You two. Go sit in the living room.”

They do as their told while Young claps his hands slowly. “Bravo. You had me fooled.”

“Shut the fuck up. I want my money. Then, we’re out of here.
